Burten, Bell, Carr Development, Inc. (BBC) is a nonprofit Community Development Corporation created in 1990. Its mission is to enhance the quality of life for residents of Ward 5 by initiating and cultivating housing, retail, employment, and recreation opportunities through effective partnerships with residents, community groups, government, corporations and institutions.
BBC has launched a major multi-faceted project to improve the health and well-being of community residents, called the Bridgeport Market, Café and Community Kitchen (MC²). MC² is a comprehensive intervention designed to create sustainable employment and business opportunities, improve access to healthy affordable foods, and promote nutrition education.
The Bridgeport Café, a part of MC², opened in September 2012 in the 7200 block of Kinsman Road. It's the first phase of a community development project to improve nutrition in the neighborhood. In addition to the cafe, the facility includes cold storage where local gardeners can clean and store produce, and a community kitchen called CornUcopia Place, where cooking and nutrition demonstrations will take place. The project will also include a mobile food truck that will enable employees to sell fresh fruits and vegetables to the elderly and people in the neighborhood who don't have transportation.
